Two days, or four, and a night away

Multi-day trips from Seville

Some places are too far for a day, and some are worth waking up in. These trips keep Seville as your base and add a night or three: the Atlantic dunes of Doñana, a mountain town on a cliff edge with the tourists gone by eight, and a ferry across the Strait that puts you in Morocco by lunchtime. Transport, hotel and breakfast are part of the price on every one of them, and you come back to the same city you left.

Morocco and Tangier

Across the Strait2 to 4 days3 trips from €319

Africa is closer to Seville than Madrid is. The ferry from Tarifa crosses the Strait in under an hour, and on the far side the language, the food, the call to prayer and the shape of the streets all change at once. A day trip can manage Tangier; anything more than Tangier needs a night.

Three trips do it at different depths. Two days and one night covers Tangier properly, with time in the medina rather than a march through it. The same two days can be combined with Gibraltar on the way down, which gets you two borders and two currencies in one weekend. And three or four days goes inland to the imperial cities and the blue streets of Chefchaouen, which is the reason most people book it.

Ronda and the white villages

The sierra, inland2 days, 1 night1 trip from €219

Ronda is the town everybody photographs and almost nobody stays in: a gorge a hundred metres deep with a bridge across it, and a bullring that is one of the oldest in Spain. The day trippers arrive at eleven and are gone by six, which is precisely the argument for sleeping there.

The route takes the white villages of the sierra on the way — Zahara, Grazalema and the rest — and then leaves you in Ronda with a free day to use as you like, which is the difference between seeing the bridge and seeing the town.

Donana National Park

The marshes, west2 days, 1 night1 trip from €219

The largest roadless wilderness in western Europe, an hour from Seville: shifting dunes, umbrella pines, and marshland that feeds half the migratory birds of the continent twice a year. It is the last refuge of the Iberian lynx and of the Spanish imperial eagle, and you get into it in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with a guide, because there is no other way in.

Two days doubles what a single visit can reach, and adds the hours that actually matter for wildlife: first light and last light, either side of a night in El Rocio, a village of sand streets and horses that has to be seen to be believed.

How a multi-day trip works

What the price covers

Transport, the guide, and the hotel with breakfast. Each page lists exactly which meals are included and which are not, and which admissions come with the trip. The rooms are twin or double as standard; travelling alone usually carries a single supplement, which the booking calendar shows before you pay.

What you need to carry

For the trips that cross into Morocco or Gibraltar, a passport, and it has to be the passport itself: a national ID card is not enough, and turning up without it is the one thing no refund covers. For the rest, light luggage and the sense to pack for a hotel rather than a suitcase.

Where they start and end

In central Seville, at the same points as the day trips, and they return there. Your room in Seville is yours to keep or not; these trips assume you are based in the city and coming back to it.

Questions about multi-day trips from Seville

Is the hotel included?

Yes, on every trip on this page, with breakfast. Each page says how many nights and in what sort of accommodation. A single room normally carries a supplement, shown in the booking calendar.

Do I need a passport?

For Morocco and for Gibraltar, yes, and only a passport will do. Both are outside the Schengen area, a Spanish or European ID card will not get you across, and arriving without it is not refundable. Doñana and Ronda stay in Spain.

Are meals included?

Breakfast always, and beyond that it varies: the Morocco trips include guided lunches, the shorter trips leave dinner to you so you can eat where you like. The first accordion of each page lists exactly what is covered.

Can I leave my luggage in Seville?

Yes, and most people do — these trips assume Seville is your base. Take an overnight bag and leave the rest in your accommodation, or use a left-luggage service if you have checked out.

How far in advance should I book?

Further ahead than a day trip, because the hotel is part of the package and the vehicles are smaller. A couple of weeks is comfortable outside high season; for Easter, the April fair and the summer weekends, as early as you can.

Can I cancel?

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure on all of them. The one exception written into the Morocco trips is documentation: if you arrive without the passport you need to cross, that is not refundable.

Are they suitable for children?

Yes, and all have reduced child rates. Doñana is the one children tend to remember, because of the vehicle and the animals. Bear in mind that the Morocco trips involve early starts, a ferry and long road stretches.

Is two days in Morocco enough?

It is enough for Tangier, which is a real city and not a theme park version of one. It is not enough for the imperial cities: Fez alone deserves a day. If Morocco rather than Tangier is what you want, take the three or four day trip.
