The show

An hour of flamenco in Triana, in a room the size it should be

Flamenco in a small room is a different thing from flamenco in a theatre. The light is low, the floor is wood, and you are close enough to hear the breath at the end of a phrase. This tablao is in the middle of Triana, which is where the art came from, and it runs a show every day of the year.

Who is on stage

A cast of dancers, singers and guitarists, working through the traditional palos. The line-up changes; the format does not.

What it feels like

The heels on the boards, the guitar underneath and a voice that sounds like it is complaining about something specific. It is not performed so much as let out, and an hour of it is exactly the right length.

Three tickets

Standard, standard with a drink, and a premium ticket that adds a drink and an Iberian platter. The calendar shows what each costs on the night you want.

No.

No. There is no dialogue and nothing is explained: the singing is in Spanish, but it is not the kind of singing you follow word by word.

There is a reduced rate, and children under four go free. Whether a small child will sit through an hour in the dark is another matter.

Flamenco in Seville

Practical questions about the art and where to see it, useful background before you travel.

Because the Cava de los Gitanos, a few streets from here, is where flamenco is generally agreed to have taken the shape it now has, and the quarter has never stopped producing the people who perform it.

A tablao puts on a show every night for whoever books; a peña is a members’ club where flamenco happens when it happens. The first is reliable, the second is a gamble with a higher ceiling.

The forms flamenco is built from — soleá, bulerías, alegrías, seguiriyas and a few dozen more — each with its own rhythm and its own mood. A good show moves through several so that you hear the range.

For a tablao, yes. Flamenco at this intensity is tiring to watch as well as to perform, and an hour of it leaves you wanting another rather than checking the time.
