The kayak tour

The only navigable river in Spain, at water level

Seville was built facing the Guadalquivir and then spent a century turning its back on it. From a kayak you get the city the way it was designed to be seen: the Torre del Oro from below, the bridges from underneath, and Calle Betis rising straight out of the water.

You do not need to have done this before

These are wide, stable kayaks, close to impossible to capsize and easy to steer. The instructor spends the first few minutes on the basics — how the paddle goes in the water, how to stop, how to turn — and stays with the group throughout.

The route

It starts in Triana and works up and down the stretch of river that runs through the city: the Triana bridge, the Torre del Oro, Calle Betis, the San Telmo bridge, the docks, the Isla de la Cartuja and the Barqueta bridge, with the María Luisa park and the aquarium on the far side.

Why the river is different

It is quiet. The stretch through Seville is a dead arm with no current and no commercial traffic, so the loudest thing on it is the rowing eights training. Two hours on it is as close to being alone with the city as you will get.

Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

About two hours on the water, plus the briefing beforehand.

None. The kayaks are stable and designed for beginners, and an instructor teaches the basics before you set off and stays with the group.

Yes. It is a requirement for taking part, and life jackets are provided and worn.

Seven years old. Anyone under eighteen must be accompanied by an adult who takes responsibility for them.

Probably a little, and on a hot day that is the point. There are changing rooms at the club, so bring a towel and something dry.

Spanish, English, French or Italian. You choose on the booking form.

Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the activity.

The Guadalquivir

Practical questions about the river itself, useful background before you travel.

It is the only major navigable river in Spain, and it is the reason Seville exists: ships sailed from here to the Americas for two centuries, and the first voyage around the world ended at this quay.

It is a working river and it is not a swimming pool, but the stretch through the city is a still arm used daily by rowing clubs, and getting splashed is entirely normal.

The evening departure, without much argument. The light on the west bank about an hour before sunset is the reason most of the photographs of Seville from the water exist.

Rowing, mostly. Seville hosts international regattas on it and the clubs train here every morning; the eights you will see are usually faster than you are.
