The river cruise

An hour on the river that built the city

The Guadalquivir is the only navigable river in Spain and the reason Seville became, for two centuries, the port through which everything from the Americas passed. This is the simplest way to see the city from it: one hour, one boat, both banks.

What you see from the water

The Torre del Oro and the Maestranza on one side, Calle Betis and Triana on the other, then upriver past the Isla de la Cartuja and the site of the 1992 world exposition, with its bridges: Triana, San Telmo, La Barqueta, the Alamillo.

The history is the route

The ships that reached the New World left from this quay, and Magellan’s expedition finished here after the first voyage around the world. The commentary follows that thread rather than listing buildings.

Simple on purpose

There is no guide to keep up with and nothing to book beyond the ticket. You get on, you sit down, and an hour later you are back where you started with a clear idea of how the city is laid out.

The Guadalquivir in Seville

Practical questions about the river, useful background before you travel.

Because the Guadalquivir is navigable that far. It made Seville the only Spanish city authorised to trade with the Americas for most of the 16th and 17th centuries, which is where the cathedral and half the palaces came from.

A 13th-century Almohad watchtower on the bank, part of a chain that closed the river with a boom. The name comes from the tiles that once covered it, not from any treasure stored inside.

A world exposition on the Isla de la Cartuja that rebuilt half the city: the bridges you pass under, the high-speed railway and the ring roads all date from it.

The best view of Triana is, certainly. Calle Betis from the water, with the coloured houses above the bank, is the image most people leave with.
