The bike tour

The whole city in two and a half hours, on the flat

Seville is one of the best cities in the world to cycle in, and that is not marketing: it is flat, it has over 160 km of two-way segregated lanes running from the outskirts to the centre, and the traffic has learned to live with them. A bike covers in an afternoon what would take you two days on foot.

Across the river and back

The route starts near the Alameda de Hércules, crosses the Guadalquivir to the Isla de la Cartuja and comes back through Triana, so you get both banks and the bridges between them.

Along the water

Then it runs parallel to the river past the Maestranza bullring and the Torre del Oro, and turns into the María Luisa park for the gardens and the Plaza de España, which is the one place in Seville that looks better from a bicycle than on foot.

And into the old town

The last stretch goes up the Avenida de la Constitución and into Santa Cruz, for the Cathedral, the Giralda and the Alcázar from the outside. The guide stops at each of them; the order can change with the traffic, the objective does not.

The bike stays with you

When the tour ends you keep the bike for the rest of the day at no extra charge, which is the detail that makes this better value than it looks. Most people go straight back to whatever they liked most.

Cycling in Seville

Practical questions about the city and its bike lanes, useful background before you travel.

Yes, and it happened fast: the city built the core of its network in a few years around 2007 and went from almost no cycling to one of the highest rates in Spain. It is flat, the lanes are segregated from traffic and painted green, and they connect.

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to see the city. There is a public hire scheme with stations across the centre, and rental shops for longer hires.

As city cycling goes, unusually so, because most of the network is physically separated from cars. The main hazards are pedestrians stepping into the lane and the tram in the centre.

The riverside path from the Torre del Oro to the Barqueta bridge and back down the Triana side. It is entirely traffic-free and it gives you the city from the water.
