C. Francos 19, Casco Antiguo, 41004 Seville · View on Google Maps

Please arrive about ten minutes early, so that the whole group can go in at the booked time.

Skip-the-line access to the Cathedral and the Giralda, so you go in at your booked time instead of queuing at the box office.

A guided tour in English with an official guide through the cathedral and its chapels.

Shoulders must be covered to enter the Cathedral and the Giralda. It is worth knowing before you dress for a hot day.

Bring your original, physical ID or passport. Carrying it and showing it on the day is compulsory to get in, and a photograph of it on your phone is not accepted.

After booking you will be asked for the full name and ID or passport number of everyone in the party, because access to the monument is arranged in advance.

Comfortable shoes: the whole visit is on foot, and the way up the Giralda is a long climb if you decide to do it.

The tickets are nominative and are bought in advance, so the amount corresponding to the tickets is not refundable under any circumstances.

For the rest of the price: cancel more than 48 hours before the start and you are refunded in full; between 48 and 24 hours before, half; less than 24 hours before, there is no refund.

The guided tour

A mosque, and then the largest church they dared to build

Seville Cathedral was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and an Asset of Outstanding Universal Value in 2010. It was raised on the site of the old Aljama mosque, and two pieces of that mosque are still standing: the minaret, which everyone now calls the Giralda, and the Patio de los Naranjos.

The church the canons wanted

For more than 150 years after the conquest the Muslim temple went on being used for Christian worship. It was in 1401 that the chapter decided to replace it, and the building work ran on until 1506. Tradition has the canons saying they wanted a church so large that anyone who saw it finished would think them mad.

The Giralda, minaret and bell tower

During the Renaissance several rooms attached to the Gothic church were rebuilt — the Sacristy, the Chapter House and the Royal Chapel — and the top of the Giralda was added by Hernán Ruíz. At 104 metres it is visible from every part of the city, and it is the monument Seville is recognised by.

Columbus, and the greatest altarpiece in the Christian world

With an official English-speaking guide you go through the interior uncovering what it holds: the remains of Christopher Columbus, carried on the shoulders of four heralds, and the vast gilded altarpiece that took the best part of a century to carve. The guide explains what you are looking at, which in a building this size is the difference between a walk and a visit.

The Patio de los Naranjos, and the climb if you want it

After the guided part inside, there is the Patio de los Naranjos, the orange-tree courtyard left over from the mosque. And if you feel like it, you can go up the Giralda on your own for the view over the rooftops — access is included in your ticket.

Important: depending on the monument’s own schedule, the weather and the pace of the group, the visit may vary in its content or in the order in which the spaces are seen. Your guide will organize the route in whatever way works best on the day.

Planning your visit to Seville Cathedral

Practical questions about the monument itself, useful background before you travel.

An hour and a half covers the interior properly with someone explaining it. Add twenty minutes or so for the Giralda and the courtyard, and you are at two hours. It is a very big building and it rewards not rushing.

The Cathedral holds a tomb carried by four heralds, and Seville has argued the point with Santo Domingo for well over a century, since his remains were moved more than once. Genetic testing published in 2006 supported the Seville claim. Whether every bone made the journey is another matter, and the guides enjoy the question.

Both, one after the other. The lower two thirds are the minaret of the Almohad mosque that stood here; the belfry crowning it is a Renaissance addition. The join is visible once someone points it out.

No stairs, ramps — wide, shallow ones that turn around the core of the tower, built so that a rider could get to the top without dismounting. It is a long way up, but it is a walk rather than a climb.

The courtyard of the old mosque, where worshippers washed before prayer. It survived the demolition along with the minaret, and the orange trees are still planted on the old grid.

The Royal Alcázar faces the Cathedral across the square, the Archive of the Indies sits between the two, and the lanes of the Barrio de Santa Cruz begin just behind them.
