The show

An hour of Andalusian horses, doing what they were bred to do

The Pura Raza Española is the reason Andalusia has the reputation it has for horses, and this show is built around them: an hour of dressage, folklore and the traditions the region organises its year by, in an indoor arena.

What happens

Classical dressage, the movements the breed was developed for, set against the customs of the region: carnival, Holy Week, the fair, the pilgrimage to El Rocío. It is choreographed rather than a demonstration, and it is designed to be watched rather than studied.

The horses

Pura Raza Española throughout — the Andalusian horse — which is the breed that ended up in every riding school in Europe because of exactly what you will see it do here.

Getting there

The arena is out of town on the road towards Madrid, and there is no transfer: this is a ticket, not an excursion. If you have a car it is straightforward; if not, budget for a taxi each way and check the return before you go.

Andalusian horses

Practical questions about the breed and the tradition, useful background before you travel.

The Andalusian horse: compact, grey more often than not, with a high-stepping action and a temperament that made it the preferred horse of the European courts for three centuries. Most classical dressage was developed on it.

A pilgrimage to a village in the marshes west of Seville, made partly on horseback and by ox-cart, that moves the best part of a million people every spring. Horses are not decorative in this part of Spain.

Because the countryside around it breeds them, and because the two biggest events in the city’s year — the April fair and the Rocío — are both built around riding. The carriages in the centre are the visible end of something much larger.

No. The Royal Andalusian School is in Jerez, an hour and a half south, and it is a different institution with a different show. This one is closer to Seville.
